The Selknam player values his teammates who have gone abroad. He claims to be going through a process in which he evaluates his continuity in the national franchise.
Ignacio Silva (34 years old), recent World Cup in France 2023, admits to going through a period of reflection about his future in rugby. The Selknam and Los Cóndores striker does not know which jersey he will defend in the next competition. What he appreciates is the boom experienced by his teammates, who little by little begin to emigrate to important teams abroad. “The experience and learning gained from competing on highly demanding international stages is crucial in increasing quality and individual skills, which has a direct impact on strengthening the game in our country,” says the Ambassador of Umbro.
Have you had any offers to go abroad?
I did not receive any offers to play abroad, neither before nor after the World Cup. My career has developed entirely in Chile, which has been a journey full of challenges and important learnings. Although I do not rule out the possibility of international experience in the future, for now I am focused and committed to rugby in my country.
Is it only displayed in Selknam?
Currently, I am in a moment of reflection and analysis about my future. I view this stage as a pause, a time to evaluate options and decide the best path forward in my career, always looking to grow and develop as a player.
For Chilean rugby to continue to develop, should it expand to other world championships?
Clearly, for rugby in Chile to continue to grow, it is essential that players participate in higher level leagues around the world.
What do you think about the large number of Chileans going abroad?
I think it’s great news that more and more Chilean players have the opportunity to play abroad. This experience allows them to acquire new skills, to take on high-level challenges and above all to bring this experience back to enrich national rugby. Hopefully this trend continues and more players can experience this valuable experience.
Is the Chilean rugby player looked at differently after the World Cup?
After our participation in the World Cup, the media, commentators and fans highlighted our style of play and the passion with which we compete. This has generated greater recognition towards the Chilean players, something that we appreciate and that motivates us to continue working hard.
Can we now make a living from rugby in Chile?
I don’t know if you can live alone while playing rugby. However, thanks to initiatives like Selknam, the first professional rugby franchise in Chile, it is now possible for players to dedicate themselves fully to this sport and obtain corresponding remuneration. This represents a significant step forward for Chilean rugby, providing a platform for players to stand out and attract attention on the international stage.
What do you think of the changes the franchise has brought?
Changes to the franchise after the World Cup have focused on maintaining high standards and motivation, both for the current team and future generations. These adjustments are crucial to ensure that we remain competitive and that Chilean rugby continues its upward trajectory on the international stage.
Are you willing to allow foreigners in the club again?
Although I don’t have specific information on the inclusion of foreign players in the national team, I think opening the doors to international talent could be beneficial. Diversity within the team would not only enrich the tactics and skills on the field, but also provide a valuable opportunity for our local players to learn from different playing styles and approaches. However, any decision in this regard must carefully balance the promotion of local talent and the benefits of international experience.
Are you afraid that the rugby boom will pass because the World Cup has already passed?
I don’t think interest in rugby in Chile will diminish just because the World Cup has passed. I think the World Cup brought a lot of attention to rugby. It is important now to take advantage of this opportunity to continue to promote rugby, engaging the community and encouraging participation at all levels, to ensure that interest and passion for the sport continues to grow.
Should we work on thinking about the next World Cup?
It is undoubtedly essential that Chilean rugby players and organizations work towards the next World Cup. The event is not only a way to demonstrate our skills internationally, but also an opportunity to measure our progress and set goals. Preparing for the World Cup means maintaining high training standards, encouraging the skill development of young players and building a strong, cohesive team.
Does Chile have what it takes to get excited about a second World Cup?
Chile definitely has the potential to aspire to participate in another World Cup. With the experience gained and the foundations already established, we can focus on perfecting our gameplay and structuring it on this basis, as well as identifying and developing new talents. The key will be to maintain the momentum and continue to build on the foundations we have already established, ensuring we are ready to compete successfully on the global stage.
What did Lemoine tell you that you should do in future seasons?
Although I haven’t had the opportunity to speak directly with Jake due to my current situation with Selknam, I have high hopes for him to join the team. His concern for the team game and his extensive experience of professional rugby are elements which, in my opinion, can contribute significantly to the development of the team. I see him as a great leader and his vision can enrich our dynamics and our strategy on the ground.
What does the arrival of Jake Mangin as new head coach bring? Were you able to speak to him?
Since I live half way out of Selknam, I haven’t been able to speak to him directly. However, I think he will make a very good contribution to the team thanks to his collective vision and his experience of professional rugby.
What is Selknam’s goal for this season?
As I said before, I’m on hold with Selknam. This season we will continue to build on recent achievements and further strengthen our presence in regional and international rugby. This involves not only maintaining a high level of play and consistent results, but also encouraging the development of new talent within the team. We want to ensure that Selknam is not only a quality competitor in the present, but also sows the seeds for future success, ensuring that Chilean rugby continues to grow and gain global recognition.
