The graffiti artist has taken over several walls in London to immortalise his interventions this week. However, one of them was stolen by a group of subjects shortly after Banksy confirmed he was the author.
It’s not one, but three. Banksy the enigmatic British street artist, surprised this week by confirming the paternity of the new works of art, this time with animals .
This is an unusual practice for him, since his creations usually appear a few months apart.
Before this animal series, his last intervention took place in June of this year during the festival of Glastonbury where he threw an inflatable boat filled with dolls representing immigrants into the middle of the crowd.
What are Banksy’s new works?
Banksy began his animal series in the Kew Green area of Richmond, southwest London. The piece features a goat standing on a wall duct, as if about to lose its balance. The photo also shows that the animal appears to be being monitored by a security camera.
Then he continued with two elephants who stick their heads through closed windows, looking at each other. This work appeared in a building in the Chelsea district.
On Wednesday, the British artist confirmed on his social networks the authorship of a third work, located on a bridge of the Shoreditch Street tube station. It is the silhouette of three monkeys hanging in different ways, as if they were about to fall into the street.
A day later he released the fourth member of the series, also set in southwest London. It is a wolf standing and which was painted on the surface of a satellite dish, which is located on the roof of a premises in the Peckham district. In this case, the artist uploaded a double photograph on Instagram, to represent the work during the day and at night.
However, shortly after the graffiti artist shared this post on the platforms, the work was stolen by a group of hooded men.
Banksy usually uses the same method every time he intervenes. Through his Instagram account, he shares an image of them – in an incomparable style – to let it be known that he is the author. This prompts his millions of followers to start theorizing about where exactly each piece fits and what it might mean.
Regarding the goat, users who follow the graffiti artist’s work have suggested that this could mean that there is currently nowhere where privacy truly exists.
While in elephants, one of the theories mentioned was that it was based on the phrase “elephant in the room,” which indicates that there are clear truths that are being ignored, or an obvious problem that one does not want to discuss.
Regarding the three hanging monkeys, it has been speculated that this could mean a criticism of the somewhat chaotic behaviors that exist in society.
The mystery of Banksy’s identity
Banksy first made a name for himself in the 1990s when he spray-painted his works on walls in Bristol. He later moved to London. Over the years, he has become one of the most acclaimed artists in the world.
Through his street art, he seeks to make visible the social, political and environmental problems that occur in the world, which has led him to become a reference for many artists.
At the same time, their creations are generally highly appreciated on the market. An example is the piece Love is in the trash (Love is in the trash, in Spanish), sold in 2021 for the sum of 21.25 million euros.
But beyond the popularity and recognition that revolve around his figure, his identity has remained a great enigma for decades. This is because, by his own decision, Banksy has preferred to remain anonymous before the world.
One of the most well-known aspects is that his origins are in the city of Bristol. In addition, in 2010 he made his directorial debut with the film Exit through the gift shopwith which he was even nominated for an Oscar in the category of best documentary film.
Regarding his identity as such, it has been suggested that his possible names would be Robert, Robbie or Robin.
In an interview he gave to the BBC In the summer of 2003, in connection with the opening of an exhibition, journalist Nigel Screw asked him if his real name was “Robert Banks”. To this, Banksy replied that it was “Robbie”.
One of the hypotheses that has gained the most strength is that Banksy is Robin Cunningham He is a man in his 50s who grew up in the suburbs of Bristol, attended the Cathedral School and is married to a former Labour Party researcher, Joy Millward, he said. Daily Mail .
He was also associated with the British Robert Del Naja leader of the band Massive Attack and graffiti artist in the 80s. This theory has however lost its force in recent times.
During this week, the same British media published images that could correspond to Banksy’s creation of one of the works in the animal series, in particular that of the goat.
The footage, obtained by a security camera early Monday morning, shows two men wearing orange reflective clothing and helmets riding in the back of a vehicle equipped with a tailgate lift. One of them has his face covered by a mask and is believed to be Banksy.
As the hours passed, workers at an engineering company discovered the silhouette of the goat on a wall. While working at Boss & Co, a company that manufactures exclusive weapons, they explained to the media that they had seen the piece when they arrived at work and later corroborated the scene by examining security cameras.
The company also assured that it had no intention of removing the drawing from its wall and that it could protect it with methacrylate. “It must be worth at least £10,000,” they added.
