Contepomi and the challenge of beating the All Blacks at Eden Park: “The statistics are there to be broken”

The Argentine coach is looking forward to tomorrow’s duel, after last week’s victory. “How we respond is very important,” he said. His rival hasn’t fallen in that stadium since 1994.

Felipe Contepomi is eager to repeat last week’s success for Los Pumas against the All Blacks and referred to the Oceanians’ unbeaten performance at Eden Park. “Playing there means a lot, but the stats are worth breaking”he said.

The national team coach recalled what happened after Argentina’s victory over New Zealand in 2020, when they took revenge with a resounding 38-0, and highlighted that “They improved a lot from one game to the next”. Furthermore, he added: “How we respond is very important”.

The last time the All Blacks lost at Eden Park, where tomorrow they face Los Pumas from 4.05 for the second round of the Rugby Championship, was August 3, 1994 (23-20 against France). From that moment they accumulated 46 games won and two draws.

The only precedent for the Argentine National Team in that stadium was in the quarterfinals of the 2011 World Cup, when they lost 33-10 against New Zealand. The local team has played 100 matches at that venue since 1920: they record 84 wins, four draws and 12 losses.

Scott Hansen admitted he spoke to his players to get a reaction after Saturday’s loss. “H.We discuss what response we should give. They trapped us in our own field and we couldn’t get out. “Now we have a chance to respond”he said.
