Scottie Scheffler has overtaken Tiger Woods to become golf's all-time career earnings leader after winning the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sunday.
The 30-year-old Texan closed with a 4-under-par 66 to overcome a three-shot deficit and capture his second career FedEx Cup title. Winning the $10 million winner's share of the $40 million tournament purse pushed Scheffler's career PGA Tour earnings to $130,390,661.
The achievement ends a nearly 26-year reign at the top of the career money list for Woods. During his peak years from 1997 through 2008, Woods never competed for a tournament purse larger than $10 million, yet held the career earnings benchmark for over a quarter of a century.
The victory brought a slice of redemption for Scheffler, who had previously lost a playoff to Viktor Hovland at the Travelers Championship during a season in which he recorded five runner-up finishes. Hovland, who made just one birdie in his final round of 72, finished alone in second place to claim the $5 million runner-up prize.
Final round comeback at East Lake
Scheffler began his Sunday comeback on the second hole, striking a 5-iron on the 211-yard par three to within two inches of the cup for an easy birdie. He drew even with Hovland on the fourth hole after sinking a 25-foot birdie putt.
Scheffler pulled ahead for the first time on the 13th hole and maintained his lead through the closing stretch at East Lake Golf Club, a historic private venue in Atlanta that serves as the permanent home for the PGA Tour's season-ending championship.
"This was a week I brought a lot of good energy to the course and tried to do my best," Scheffler said during the trophy presentation ceremony. "Coming from behind and being able to win tournaments is a really cool feeling."
Despite claiming the title, Scheffler navigated multiple setbacks during his final round. He recorded two bogeys, missing a wedge shot from the fairway on the seventh hole and suffering from a difficult lie in the rough on the 14th. Nevertheless, he stood out as the only player from the final three groupings to finish below par for the day.
Scheffler secured his final birdie of the round on the 16th hole, hitting out of a fairway bunker to 11 feet and converting the putt. Meanwhile, Hovland suffered a frustrating stretch on the greens, watching three separate putts lip out of the cup over four holes, including two birdie attempts and one par putt.
Postseason dominance and season statistics
Sunday's triumph marked Scheffler's third victory of 2026, with two of those wins coming within the last three weeks during the PGA Tour's postseason playoffs. His three titles this year tie him with Chris Gotterup, Matt Fitzpatrick, and U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark for the most tournament wins on tour in 2026.
The victory represented the 22nd PGA Tour title of Scheffler's career, with 13 of those victories coming by a margin of at least three strokes. Worldwide, it marked his 25th career professional title, a tally that includes the Olympic gold medal he won in Paris two years ago. Scheffler previously won his first FedEx Cup title two years ago and opened his 2026 campaign with a victory at The American Express.
Scheffler also remains in contention for further history as PGA Tour members prepare to vote on the Jack Nicklaus Award, which honors the tour's player of the year. Scheffler has won the prestigious award in each of the last four years. Securing a fifth consecutive honor would tie him with Woods for the longest streak of player of the year awards in PGA Tour history.
Ryan Gerard finished alone in third place after shooting a final-round 72. Gerard, who started the day just one shot behind Hovland, suffered a double bogey on the opening hole before recording 13 consecutive pars to close out his tournament.
Tiger Woods legal proceedings in Florida
While Scheffler celebrated his record-breaking purse at East Lake, Woods continues to navigate a difficult year off the course. The 15-time major winner has faced legal troubles stemming from a recent driving under the influence arrest following a single-vehicle rollover crash in Florida, which was followed by a stint in a rehabilitation facility.
Woods' personal challenges have been compounded by his girlfriend Vanessa Trump's ongoing battle with cancer. The former world number one is scheduled to make his first courtroom appearance regarding the DUI charge on September 8 in South Florida.
The September courtroom date follows several postponements as prosecutors continue their formal investigation process. Woods has waived his formal arraignment and officially requested a trial by jury. His legal defense is being led by attorney Douglas Duncan.
The most recent court hearing in the case took place on August 4. That hearing followed a crucial court ruling in July that granted prosecutors permission to obtain medical records from the hospital where Woods was treated following the rollover crash.
