Viktor Hovland takes a one-shot lead over playing partner Ryan Gerard into the final round of the Tour Championship after posting a five-under 65 at East Lake on Saturday.
The 2023 FedExCup champion finished his third round with consecutive birdies to move to 15 under par, holding a narrow advantage over Gerard heading into Sunday's final group.
World No 1 Scottie Scheffler sits three shots off the lead in third place at 12 under par as he seeks a second FedExCup title. Scheffler is tied with Chris Gotterup, Adam Scott and Ludvig Åberg, who closed his round of 65 with three straight birdies.
Rory McIlroy moved into tied-seventh place at 10 under par alongside Cameron Young after posting a round-of-the-day 63. McIlroy remains five strokes behind Hovland as he attempts to secure a record-extending fourth FedExCup victory. All 29 players in the field are under par heading into the final day.
Saturday leaderboard battle
The halfway co-leaders faced strong pressure from a crowded leaderboard during Saturday's play at the PGA Tour season finale. Gotterup joined the lead with a birdie at the third hole, where Hovland also picked up a stroke before dropping a shot after failing to get up and down from a bunker at the fourth.
Young birdied two of his opening six holes to reach 10 under par, building on his round-of-the-day 62 from Friday. Meanwhile, McIlroy erased an eight-shot deficit from earlier in his round by recording four birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine to join the heavy battle for the top spot.
After Gotterup briefly held the solo lead, both Hovland and Gerard birdied the par-five sixth hole to reach 11 under par. Gerard made a nine-foot birdie putt at the seventh and holed a 12-footer at the 12th hole to double his lead over the chasing pack. Gerard previously won his sole PGA Tour title at last year's Barracuda Championship.
Hovland responded by making a birdie putt from a similar distance at the 13th hole, followed by a 15-foot par save at the 14th to stay alongside Gerard. A birdie at the 15th brought Hovland level at 13 under par before both players saved par at the 16th.
Hovland took the outright lead by converting an eight-foot birdie putt at the 17th hole. Both players then birdied the par-five 18th to ensure they will play together in the final group on Sunday.
Hovland and McIlroy reflect on third round
Hovland expressed satisfaction with his performance and consistency across the week. "Super pleased," Hovland said. "65 out there, especially with that finish, I'm super happy with that. I'd say the last few weeks I have been putting a lot better, but it's been hard to put together consistently good days in a row. It's been just one of those weeks where I've been able to put it together every single day for three days."
McIlroy began the day seven shots behind the halfway lead and scrambled for par at the first hole before making a three-putt bogey at the second. The Masters champion recovered with consecutive birdies on the third and fourth holes, added a birdie at the par-five sixth, and sank a 10-foot birdie putt at the seventh before missing a birdie opportunity at the driveable eighth hole.
After a short birdie at the 10th hole was canceled out by a bogey at the 11th, the world No 2 sank an eight-foot birdie putt at the 12th. McIlroy then holed three birdie putts from 12 feet or longer on consecutive holes from the 15th to match his lowest career round at East Lake. His nine birdies equaled his highest single-round total on the PGA Tour this season.
McIlroy noted that improved putting was crucial to his turnaround after winning the FedExCup in 2016, 2019 and 2022. "I got myself back in the tournament," McIlroy said. "I think the difference today was I just putted a lot better. I think I lost maybe a combined three (shots) on the greens over the first two days and I probably gained over three on the greens today."
"The ball striking has been there," McIlroy added. "Hit some nice iron shots, drove it well for the most part. I felt like I played okay the last couple days, just wasn't getting as much out of my game as I wanted to. I pieced it together today and obviously with a better score."
Background and final round coverage
The Tour Championship serves as the finale of the PGA Tour season, held annually at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. The 30-player field competes for the FedExCup, the season-long points race that concludes the PGA Tour calendar.
Hovland, from Norway, is aiming for his second FedExCup trophy following his victory in 2023, while American world No 1 Scheffler is seeking his second title. Northern Ireland's McIlroy is aiming to extend his record with a fourth FedExCup championship.
