Tomás Barrios falls in Salvador de Bahía Challenger final

The national tennis player could not face the Portuguese Joao Domingues and lost 7-6 (9) and 6-1. Beyond the defeat, his fine performance in Brazil lifted him to 134th place in the ATP rankings, the best position of his career.

Tomás Barrios (145º) could not devote his beautiful week. The national tennis player lost 7-6 (9) and 6-1 against the Portuguese Joao Domingues (389th) in the Salvador Challenger final , remaining ad portas of what would have been his second title in this category. The Chilean competed in the first set, however, in the second he was overmatched.

The fall left Barrios with a record of one win and three losses in the finals he has played in his career in the individual category. On this occasion, he was close to winning in the first round, this because he could not get two set points. The two broke their respective serves four times.

Once they again prevailed in their own services, they remained until the decisive game where the European won 11-9. In the second, Domingues looked better physically, despite both having won their semi-final in three sets, and took advantage of Barrios losing serve twice.

winning week

Beyond this last result, the chillanejo played a great tournament in Brazil. In the round of 16, he beat Joao Menezes (262nd) 6-2, 6-3. Until the semi-final, all games managed to win them in straight sets. In the second round, he did it against Joao Reis Da Silva (419th) by 6-3 and 7-6. Leaving two local competitors on the road.

In the quarter-finals, he had to face another Chilean: Gonzalo Lama (259th), which he beat 6-2 and 6-3. To then leave aside the Argentinian Gonzalo Villanueva (330th) 6-7, 6-3 and 6-4 in the largest, and therefore most exhausting, of its triumphs.

At the same time, Joao Domingues eliminated Renzo Olivo (188th), one of the favorites of the competition, which gave him a boost and emboldened him for the final, where he clearly imposed himself.

The positive performance of Tomás Barrios means a big jump in the ATP rankings, as he will climb eleven places and appear in position 134 overtaking for example Nicolás Jarry, who will go from 147th to 138th, after finishing in the semi-final of the Challenger 100 in Aix-en-Provence, where he fell to Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi (70th) 6-7, 7- 6 and 7-6.

So far, the only title for the pupil of Guillermo Gómez remains the Meerbusch Challenger 2021 , where he defeated Argentinian Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in the final, 7-6, 6-3. His next stop will be the Challenger 80 from Coquimbo, which departs tomorrow.
