Carlos Alcaraz surprised in his first official match as world number one by losing to Astana ATP 500 in the view of David Goffin 7-5 and 6-3 in one hour and 48 minutes. The Belgian, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser and number 66 in the ATP rankings, knew how to withstand the pressure and impose his tennis against the Spaniard’s erratic game.
Carlos Alcaraz lost his first match as number one in the ATP ranking
In the first set, Things started well for Alcaraz, who broke Goffin’s serve in the third game (2-1) to defeat himself and level the contest. In the sixth game, Alcaraz lost his serve again and began to build momentum until it was 5-5 when Goffin’s serve was broken in the ninth game. When everything seemed to be on the right track, number 1 clearly lost his serve in the twelfth game and the first set was 7-5.
In the second sleeve, Alcaraz complicated life again by losing his serve in the second game. In the third, he had up to three break points, but Goffin went up 3-0.
With this advantage, the Belgian knows how to keep his nerves and wait for the mistakes of the Spaniard, lost another serve in the sixth game (5-1). After winning the US Open and becoming the leader of the ATP ranking, Alcaraz did not rest and traveled to London to represent Spain in the Davis Cup. His first match was against Félix Auger-Aliassime: the Canadian defeated him 6-7 (3), 6-4 and 6-2 in what was his premiere as world number one.
