Simona Halep: “I intend to prove that I never knowingly took doping”

Romanian former world number one Simona Halep released a statement on social media denying the intentional use of banned substances.

Halep, 31, was suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Friday for testing positive at this year’s US Open. Analysis of Sample B confirmed the result of Sample A, which contained Roxadastat, which was banned by WADA.

– Today begins the most difficult match of my life: the fight for the truth. I was informed of a positive test result for a substance called Roxadastat in a very small amount, which was the biggest shock of my life.

In my entire career, the idea of cheating has never crossed my mind, because it is completely contrary to all the values I was brought up on.

Faced with such an unfair situation, I feel completely disoriented and betrayed. I will fight until the end to prove that I have never knowingly used illegal substances and I believe that sooner or later the truth will come out.

It is not a question of titles or money. It is a story of honor and love that I have developed playing tennis over the past 25 years.

Halep is ranked ninth in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Simone has won two Grand Slam tournaments in singles – French Open – 2018 and Wimbledon – 2019. In total, she has won 25 WTA tournaments (including 24 in singles). In total, Halep topped the WTA rankings for 64 weeks.
