Former world No.1 Simona Halep suspended for doping

Romanian former world number one Simona Halep suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for testing positive at this year’s US Open.

Roxadastat was found in the A sample of Halep, 31, at the US Open in August 2022. The substance is banned and listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

– On October 7, 2022, the ITIA sent the Player notice of an anti-doping rule violation under Program Article 2.1 (Prohibited Substance in Player’s Sample) and/or Article 2.2 (Use of a banned substance).

The player exercised her right to request a B sample analysis, which confirmed the results of the A sample. sports governing bodies, the ITIA said.

Halep is ranked ninth in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Simone has won two Grand Slam tournaments in singles – French Open – 2018 and Wimbledon – 2019. In total, she has won 25 WTA tournaments (including 24 in singles). In total, Halep topped the WTA rankings for 64 weeks.
