New tennis season kicks off with $15m mixed team tournament in Australia

The United Cup mixed team tournament sponsored by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) will kick off the 2023 tennis season, according to Tennis Australia.

The tournament will take place from December 29 to January 8 in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney. The competition will feature 18 teams, which will include up to four men and up to four women. The United Cup prize fund will be $15 million. Additionally, for the first time in the history of a tournament of this type, 500 ATP and WTA ranking points will be awarded.

“The United Cup is a unique opportunity to combine the men’s and women’s circuits in a completely new way, never seen before. Here in Australia, we have the opportunity to use tennis’ unique position so that the best men and women in the world can compete side by side and represent their country at the highest level,” said Craig Tiley, CEO of Tennis Australia.

The top 12 teams will consist of six men and six women with the highest world rankings. The remaining six teams will qualify based on the best combined men’s and women’s rankings from the same country.

Matches will consist of two men’s singles, two women’s singles and one mixed doubles.
