Tennis. Bank Erste opened. Semi final. Medvedev – Dimitrov. Direct

On Saturday afternoon, October 29, at the ATP-500 tournament called Erste Bank Open, which takes place in Vienna, the capital of Austria, the semi-final matches will take place. In the first of them, Russian Daniil Medvedev and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov will fight. This will be the sixth professional head-to-head tennis match. At the moment, the Russian has a slight advantage over the opponent and is considered the favorite for the upcoming game.

So, if we look at the statistics of the meetings between Medvedev and Dimitrov, we see that the Bulgarian won the first face to face and, for the moment, the last. The first was in 2017, when Daniil was just starting his career in adult tennis. Then the more experienced and older Grigor outplayed the Russian on grass in the quarter-finals of the London tournament – 6:3, 3:6, 6:3. Then Medvedev beat Dimitrov without any problems in three matches consecutive: Washington 2017 (6:4, 6:2), US Open 2019 (7:6, 6:4, 6:3) and Cincinnati 2021 (6:3, 6:3). It should be noted that these three fights all took place on hard courts, and that the meeting of tennis players at the US Open took place within the framework of the semi-finals.

But about the last one-on-one with the Bulgarian, of course, Daniil reluctantly recalls. It happened a little over a year ago, at the Indian Wells Masters as part of the 1/8 finals. Medvedev started well, even excellent, winning the first set without hassle – 6:4. In the second, the Russian caught up with his game at all, made two breaks and led 4-1, while serving in the sixth game. But the score 5:1 did not happen. Daniil lost not only his next serve but also 7 more games in a row. Why Medvedev’s failure happened remains a mystery. Daniil only returned his game to the court in the middle of the third set. But it was too late – by then Dimitrov had taken the start and, thanks to the serve, was able to win the fight. Well, if a Russian remembers this meeting a year ago, then only for the purpose of revenge today.

Note that on the way to the semi-finals, Dimitrov knocked out our Andrey Rublev from the tournament. The other two opponents of Grigor, whom he overtook in the tournament, are not in the top 50. But Medvedev had very difficult opponents in the 1/8 and quarter-finals. However, Daniil showed near exemplary tennis in bouts against Austrian Dominik Thiem and Italian Yannick Sinner which inspires optimism ahead of today’s match.
