Simona, former world number one Halep did not intentionally violate anti-doping rules, there is no reason to doubt her honesty, said Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) chief Steve Simon.
Previously, Halep, 31, was temporarily suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which found the banned drug roxadastat in the athlete’s blood. Halep denied the doping allegations and said she intended to “fight for the truth”.
“I don’t think she did anything on purpose. At the same time, I also believe in our anti-doping program, I think it’s good, and our players support it as well. And if you ask Simone, she will answer the same thing. I am confident that as the situation evolves, the truth will come out and we will deal with it if necessary. But I really sympathize with Simone, because I will never question her honesty, ESPN quote Simone.
Halep is ranked tenth by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). Simone has won two Grand Slam singles tournaments – the 2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon.
