Kostyuk: When you play for a country, you feel more pressure, but I did well

Kostyuk brought the Ukrainian national team the first point in the duel with Japan

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk shared her emotions from the first match of the playoffs Billie Jean King Cup against the team Japan.

“I am rarely satisfied with the way I play, but today I think I did well. Yes, of course, I was more nervous than I wanted to be. Of course, when you play for a country, you feel a little more pressure. Moreover, I haven’t played matches for a long time, I had a rest and didn’t take a racket in my hands for two weeks.

“But after the match, I calmed down and, in principle, I am satisfied with my performance. You can always play better, but sometimes you need to praise yourself too. What I’m really happy with is the way I played the important balls. That’s what I’m very happy about.”

Kostyuk beat Misaki Doi in two sets and brought the first point of the Ukrainian national team in the confrontation. In the second match of the day, Katarina Zawatskaya defeated Moyuka Uchijima.

Tomorrow Kostyuk will play against Uchijima (the match starts at 06:00 Kyiv time), and Zawatskaya will play against Doi. The duets Kostyuk / Lyudmila Kichenok and Shuko Aoyama / Ena Shibahara should play in the doubles match.

The winner of the match will play in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifier next year.

In April, the Ukrainian national team consisting of Dayana Yastremska, Katarina Zavatskaya and the Kichenok sisters lost to the USA in the qualification and failed to qualify for the final part of the tournament.
