In a poll of journalists, the Polish tennis player was ahead of the Swede Armand Duplantis and the Dutchman Max Verstappen
Polish tennis player Iga Schwentek recognized as the best European athlete in 2022. The annual award “European Sports Personality of the Year”, which is organized by the Polish Press Agency, is awarded according to a survey of journalists from more than 20 European publications, including from Ukraine.
Sventek scored 118 points in the voting, 12 points ahead of Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis. The third place was taken by the world champion in Formula 1 Dutchman Max Verstakppen.
The top ten European athletes also included: the Spaniards Carlos Alcaras and Rafael Nadal (tennis), the Frenchman Killian Mbappe (football), the Norwegians Johannes Be (biathlon) and Teresa Johaug (skiing), the Romanian David Popovich (swimming) and the Dane Jonas Wingegaard ( cycling).
Previously, Schwentek was named the tennis player of the year according to the results of voting among the tennis media. The Polish athlete also received the ITF World Champions award.
