Russian tennis player Anastasia Pivovarova expressed the opinion that the withdrawal of Russian athletes from official international competitions can be used to develop the sport in the country.
“Of course, it’s a blow. I probably won’t say if it’s fair or not. On the one hand, when so much negativity arises, it might be less of a pain for some athletes not to compete on the international scene under such conditions. But in general, I am such a person that I consider any negative situation not as a drama, but as an opportunity. And now is the time of opportunities for the development of sport in the country with subsequent access to the international level.
We still have the Soviet system in many sports – it’s beautiful, but it hasn’t been developed in any way. Many specialists left and there was no follow-up. I hope that this situation will serve as an impetus to adapt the Soviet system of training athletes to the modern realities of each sport. And in the future, we will have a new wave of excellent athletes who will occupy the highest places in the Olympic Games. I am sure that these restrictions will not last long, and such a sports powerhouse as ours will soon take part in all international competitions again,” Pivovarova told Gazeta.Ru.
