Former American world No. 1 Venus Williams defeated compatriot Kathy Volonez in the first round of the tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.
The game ended 7:6 (7:4), 6:2 in favor of the 42-year-old Williams. She claimed the first victory in 552 days: the last time Williams Sr. managed to win in the first round of Wimbledon 2021, then she beat Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu in straight sets.
In 2022, Williams lost in the first round at tournaments in Washington, Toronto, Cincinnati and the US Open.
The American’s next opponent in Auckland will be China’s Zhu Lin.
Venus Williams is a five-time winner of the Wimbledon tournament and two-time winner of the US Open in singles, four-time Olympic champion. She is currently ranked 1003rd in the WTA rankings.
