In 2022, Medvedev had a decent season, scoring 45 wins in 64 matches and winning titles at the Los Cabos Open and Vienna Open. He also placed second at the Australian Open, Rosmalen Grasscourt Championships and Halle Open.
The Russian came to Adelaide after a four-game losing streak, having left the Paris Masters 1000 and the ATP Finals in Turin earlier than expected. However, the 26-year-old started the 2023 season with a bang, with victories over Lorenzo Sonego and Miomir Kecmanovic in the first two rounds.
By contrast, Karen Khachanov has had a controversial season in 2022, scoring 36 wins in 61 matches to reach the US Open semi-finals. He also reached the Adelaide 2022 International 1 final but failed to beat Frenchman Gael Monfils to win the title.
Karen kicked off her campaign with a solid 6-2, 6-4 victory over Argentinian Pedro Cachin before continuing with another impressive performance against talented young Briton Jack Draper 6-4, 6-2.
Medvedev leads in a head-to-head encounter with Khachanov 2-1. He beat the world No. 20 when they last met at the 2019 Canadian Masters 6–1, 7–6(6).
Both tennis players will enter the quarter-final duel on the back of a good match in the first two rounds. They will be looking to keep their foot on the accelerator and continue their winning streak ahead of the Melbourne Major.
While Medvedev will undoubtedly be the favorite to win this fight, Khachanov could create problems for the former world number one.
