Australian Tennis Federation won’t withdraw Russians from Australian Open participation

The Australian Tennis Federation (Tennis Australia) has decided not to exclude Russian and Belarusian tennis players from participating in the Australian Open, reports 9News.

In February 2022, the IOC recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to participate in international competitions. The WTA and ATP allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in tournaments in a neutral status.

– Players from Russia and Belarus can only participate in international tennis tournaments as individuals – without flags or country mentions, as will be the case at the Australian Open 2023, Tennis Australia said.

“I can just follow the rules as a player,” said the Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev.

When we were suspended from Wimbledon I couldn’t play, so I didn’t play. I’m a tennis player, so in all the tournaments I can play in the world, I like to play. I’m happy to play for the fans. It’s the only thing I can do,” Medvedev added.

In the list of candidates for the tournament there are Russians Daniil Medvedev, Andrei Rublev , Karen Khachanov, Aslan Karatsev and Roman Safiullin.

Russian women will play in the women’s tournament Daria Kasatkina , Veronika Kudermetova Ekaterina Aleksandrova, Lyudmila Samsonova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Anastasia Potapova, Anna Kalinskaya, Evgenia Rodina, Anna Blinkova, Camilla Rakhimova and Varvara Gracheva.
