Former American world No. 1 Venus Williams will not participate in the Australian Open due to injury, according to the press office of the tournament organizers.
Williams Sr. was injured during the WTA 250 tournament in Auckland (New Zealand). A special invitation (wild card), which a 42-year-old American had to participate in the Australian Open, will receive Australian Kimberly Birrell.
Venus Williams is a five-time winner of the Wimbledon tournament and two-time winner of the US Open in singles, four-time Olympic champion. She is currently ranked 1003rd in the WTA rankings.
