42-year-old American was injured at the tournament in Oakland
Former world number one Venus Williams won’t play on Australian Open 2023. The 42-year-old American tennis player will miss the first Grand Slam of the year due to an injury she sustained at the WTA 250 tournament in Auckland.
In December, the organizers of the Australian Open provided Williams with a wild card into the main draw of the competition. Now the invitation will be given to Kimberly Birrell from Australia.
In early January, Venus scored her first victory in a year and a half in singles, defeating compatriot Katie Wolynets in the first round of the tournament in Oakland. In the 1/8 finals, Williams lost to Chinese Zhu Lin.
Venus Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam champion. Her best result at the Australian Open is the finals in 2003 and 2017.
The Australian Open 2023 will take place in Melbourne from 16 to 29 January. Ukrainian tennis players Angelina Kalinina, Marta Kostyuk and Katerina Beindl got places in the main draw of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.
