The Australian part of the new tennis season, 2023, is only gaining momentum, and the best players of our time will already meet in Adelaide. Russian Daniil Medvedev will fight in the semi-finals of the tournament with one of the most successful tennis players on the planet – Serbian Novak Djokovic. This fight will be the 13th full-time between the athletes. At the moment, Novak has a double advantage over Daniil in personal encounters.
For the first time on the court, Medvedev and Djokovic met in 2017, but a serious confrontation between tennis players began two seasons later. In the same 2019, the Russian won his first victory over the Serbian, beating his opponent at the Monte Carlo Masters in the quarterfinals (6:3, 4:6, 6:2). And then the tennis players traded victories in one-on-one matches until the 2021 US Open final, when Medvedev won his first Slam, beating Djokovic in three sets (6:4, 6 :4, 6:4). However, the next three fights ended exclusively in favor of the Serb. Two of which tennis players played among themselves in the 2022 season. Recall that last season Novak beat Daniil to the refusal of the Russian in the semifinals of the ATP Astana tournament (4:6, 7:6), then in the group stage of the Final Tournament (6:3, 6:7, 7:6). But can Medvedev break the losing streak against the Serb in Australia?
Another interesting nuance of tennis players’ personal encounters is the bouts on the Australian tour. They were three, and all ended in favor of Djokovic. Novak has beaten Daniil twice at the Australian Open: in the 4th round match in 2019 and in the tournament final two years ago. Another meeting of tennis players took place within the framework of the ATP Cup, which was held in 2020. Then Novak won in the semifinals. Last year, the Russian and the Serbian did not meet during the Australian tour, because Djokovic was not allowed to compete on this continent.
At the current tournament in Adelaide, Djokovic and Medvedev have yet to experience the bitterness of defeat in any of the sets. The first finalist of the tournament is already known – he became the representative of the USA Sebastian Korda.
