Alexei Selivanenko, vice-president of the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF), believes that while Australian Open organizers have decided to allow tennis players who test positive for COVID-19 to play, they have good reasons to do so.
“Tennis has protocols that are changed from time to time to accommodate many changing factors. Protocols like this have proven effective over time and have helped tennis weather the pandemic quite calmly compared to many other fields of activity. If the organizers have made such a decision, then they have enough reason to believe that at this stage it is the most rational approach to the tournament.
As for last year’s story with Novak (Djokovic), it was basically related not to tournament protocols, but to the rules of entering a particular country. Therefore, I don’t think constant discussion on the same topic makes sense,” Selivanenko told Chempionat.
The 2023 Australian Open will be held in Melbourne from January 16-29.
