Rublev fined $8,000 for incident with employee at Roland Garros

Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev fined $8,000 for behavior during a French Open match, according to journalist Ben Rothenberg on Twitter.

The Russian was awarded a penalty for an incident in the first round match against South Korea’s Sung-Woo Kwon. After losing the first set, Rublev hit the ball which, after bouncing, nearly hit a service staff man in the head. The cap fell off the man’s head. During a press conference, the tennis player apologized for his behavior, saying he had “lost his mind”.

Romania’s Irina Camellia Begu was fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct in a match against Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova.

In the third set, Begu lost control of his emotions and threw his racquet which, after bouncing off the floor, hit the stands. This frightened the boy in the front row, who started crying. The match was interrupted and the child was reassured not only by her parents and the spectators seated nearby, but also by Begu herself. The Romanian was charged with breaking the code for her tantrum but ultimately avoided disqualification.

Roland Garros is taking place in Paris, the Grand Slam tournament will end on June 5.
