Juncheng Shang reveals reasons why he fired Marcelo Ríos: ‘It was disrespectful’

The Chinese promise speaks for the first time about the breakdown of the relationship he had with the Chilean tennis player during his debut as a coach, which lasted only two months.

Juncheng Shang does not forget Marcelo Ríos. The Chilean tennis legend made his debut as the coach of the Chinese promise, who was already noted as one of the big promises on the circuit. Now, at just 17, he is set to make his Australian Open debut.

The relationship between the two, however, only lasted three months. They were worth nothing ten wins, two losses, a title challenger, the final of another and a leap from position 362 to 195 in the world rankings in the short time they have worked together. From one moment to another, the young Chinese promise fires Marcelo Ríos.

“They didn’t give me any reason why we broke up. They didn’t tell me ‘you don’t like how you You are getting dressed‘. Not one feel. I learned this from my agent, who told me ‘bad news, you’re not going to continue with Jerry’. I said ‘oh, perfect’. And I was just on the plane from Atlanta to Sarasota. I walked out and surprised Jerry and his parents and said, “So are we done?” They didn’t expect me to know, they planned to tell me through the agent. And dad says “yes”. I replied ‘crack, everything is perfect, but I would like to know the reason why we broke up’. Then the father starts talking and I don’t understand him at all. So I say, ‘Jerry, can you explain it to me?’ And he replies ‘my father says…’ explained Marcelo Ríos to El Deportivo, in September.

Today, Juncheng Shang brings out his voice to remember the episode. “It was disrespectful. For me and my family, the most important thing is to be a good person, to respect others. That’s the most important thing I want to show on and off the pitch, and with Marcelo , I think it didn’t come through 100 percent. It’s a shame it didn’t work out,” Shang told the magazine. Clay tennis court.

Shang continued his analysis. “I mean, he was very nice to me and he hopes the best for me, but I don’t want to go into the details of what really happened,” he said. “There was no natural feeling at the end. We started winning very well at Lexington which was a huge confidence boost. Having a former world number one is a very special feeling, it was a very good experience, unfortunately it didn’t work out in the end,” he concludes.
