Svitolina: I wanted to end my career, but now my goal is to return

Elina suspended performances at the end of March last year

Former first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina spoke about her upcoming return to professional tennis after a long pause.

“I haven’t touched a racket for seven months. I wanted to retire from tennis. I had maybe too many thoughts because of what happened at the end of February, because of all the nerves and all the pressure. The tournaments that I played were probably too hard for me psychologically, so I was very happy to switch off completely. Right now my goal is to come back, but I’m sure I won’t regret taking this vacation.”

“I will try to prepare for the summer, but I try not to rush things. I know that I need to be very strong to get back on tour because tennis is very strong right now in terms of fitness. All muscle groups need to be ready, and after not playing for more than seven months and little exercise after pregnancy, of course, your body is different now. And I really have to break everything down into little pieces in order to put together all the strength of my body that I will need if I want to return to the top.

Svitolina suspended performances at the end of March, preparing for the birth of her daughter. The Ukrainian lost the title of the first racket of the country during her vacation. Now Svitolina is ranked 236th in the WTA rankings and has already started training.
