President of the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) Shamil Tarpishchev told Metaratings.ru that he is confident of the Russian team’s participation in the 2024 Olympics.
– The end of 2022 proved to be productive for you: conferences of the Russian Tennis Federation and the Russian Tennis Tour, the Olympic Assembly, where you were re-elected to the Executive Committee. Is there an understanding of what Russian sports should do next?
We discussed what we would do during the year. No one has canceled the Olympic Games preparation plan. He’s staying. We have shifted the schedule, do not lose reserves and prepare the perspective. But everyone’s situation is different. Depending on the problems that exist, the solutions are different. Someone has to fight for the calendar, someone has to discuss international issues.
What do we have to do? First, focus on in-country training. And not just for us, but for all sports. I believe that to form a preparation system of a methodological component, it is necessary to work from a position of development. Now is the most fruitful time for the formation of young people in the country. The schedule depends directly on us, we will do it.
If we talk about us, we make full use of the average year and earlier access to soil, because we have no soil. All coatings are made primarily from hardwood, which does not require careful maintenance. Our soil has almost disappeared. And in central Russia you can get to the ground only in mid-May. In the Soviet Union, we came out on April 10. Now, we have decided to release on March 15, because every surface has its footwork. The Olympics will be played on clay and that will be a problem.
— What does Russian tennis expect in 2023?
“We have to build on what we did last year. We play in all competitions. We need to set more records. I am sure that we will participate in the Paris Olympics. We must try to arrive at the Olympics with a full squad. And it depends on the ranking.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11. At previous Olympics, Russian tennis players had become champions and silver medalists in mixed doubles, as well as runners-up in men’s singles.
