Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova believes that the subject of the ban on waving the Russian flag at the Australian Open arose against the background of a difficult situation, and therefore emotions run high.
Earlier, the Australian Tennis Federation announced a ban on Russian and Belarusian flags from the stands during Australian Open matches held in Melbourne. As noted, Russian flags were seen in the first-round match between Ukrainian Ekaterina Beindl and Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, as well as in the encounter between Daniil Medvedev and American Marcos Giron.
– As far as I know, it was initially forbidden to wave the flags. I have been to tennis tournaments several times, there are limits, like in all other sports. Perhaps our fans of an overabundance of feelings waved the flags too actively. Clearly, Ukrainian fans were annoyed by this. Our fans can be understood, in the absence of flags from our athletes, they have decided to support them in football. The situation is difficult, now the lines will reappear: “Since the flag is not allowed on the podium, let them not play”, and that is precisely what they are trying to make us say, because it is one of the few sports where our athletes continue to perform,” Zhurova told “.
