The Australian tennis player was the protagonist of the first chapter of the new Netflix series “Break Point”. In said episode, the player reveals the internal struggles he’s had with fame, alcohol, and his mental health.

On Friday, January 13, Netflix premiered “Breaking point” , a series that will focus on revealing the most relevant points in the careers of some tennis players, which includes both their highest and lowest moments, also going through the personal life of each. The first protagonist of this great premiere was the Australian Nick Kyrgios (21st) .

In the documentary, the Canberra native talks about many issues that surrounded his daily life early in his career, even stating that his life was spiraling out of control.

As revealed by New York Post , the controversial tennis player had a chat with his girlfriend, Costeen Hatzi, and his manager and close friend, Daniel Horsfall, explaining how fame affected him early in his career: “The first four or five years of my career have been very chaotic. When Horse (Horsfall) was on tour with me, taking care of me, when he was pretty much the only one taking care of me, he could see my mental wellbeing slipping from week to week. My life got out of control, I drank liquor every nightwithout fail”.

His rep described those times as “difficult”, mentioning that he had to go out to find Kyrgios several times after late night parties: “I used to have your location on my phone and some mornings I would go out physically to find where you were, in which hotel you were, in which house you were staying before the tournaments, before a match. It was hard said Horfall.

Kyrgios went on to explain that his ‘struggles’ changed his relationship with tennis to try and live a more ‘normal’ life: ‘I was like, well, I can’t keep doing this. I have to be nicer to myself. For my mental health, I could never be one of those players who play all year round. . I couldn’t do that. I value my family, very close friends and Cosi (Hatzi) too much like to put tennis before them . I don’t think it’s healthy,” the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up said.

Regarding this change in attitude, Kyrgios said: “I really don’t have any expectations now with my games. I just want to go out and have fun, release the pressure, and then we can live a little more normal life. . It’s much better that way, that’s for sure.”

The participation of Kyrgios’ mother

The tennis player’s mother, named Norlaila, also makes an appearance in the episode. She recalled a time when her son was “always angry” at the start of his career: “I worry about him every day because he went through some very, very unhappy times. He became aggressive He was always angry, always furious about everything.” At this moment, Norlaila can be seen holding a broken tennis racket.

At Wimbledon last July, Norlaila said in NewNews who discovered this Kyrgios had mutilated himself years ago . The tennis player’s mother recalled being told by former rep John Morris that Andy Murray approached him with concern after noticing the obvious self-harm marks on Kyrgios’ body, during a training a few years ago. “I asked him the question and he didn’t want to talk about it at the time. John told me that Andy was concerned about the evidence of self-harm on Nick’s body… And I blame others for that. For pushing him so hard, for criticizing him. Even the people we thought were supporting him.” Norlaila expressed.

“This period was very difficult. I just wanted to be constantly by his side so I could see him. If I can see it, I know it’s good. And if I can’t see him, I worry so much about him that it becomes very difficult,” said the mother of the current number 21.

The showdown that changed everything

Another important point that Kyrgios discusses in the documentary is a match against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon 2014 which ended in victory for the Australian.

The chapter’s protagonist mentions that his professional career changed forever after said victory, mentioning that, “I really didn’t know how good he was. When I was 17 I just thought I was having a growth spurt, then I started slipping and moving and things got a little serious… 2014, I had my revelation at Wimbledon and my life changed.

I went from someone no one knew to people camping outside my house . This game changed everything. From this day on, My expectations of being the next big star were huge.” condemned Nick Kyrgios.
