Armenian-Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov after reaching the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open, he supported the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh (Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh).
Khachanov on Friday in Melbourne in the match of the third round of the tournament beat the American Francis Tiafoe with a score of 6:3, 6:4, 3:6, 7:6 (11:9).
Immediately after the match ended, 26-year-old Khachanov wrote on camera: “Artsakh, hold on!!!” (“Artsakh, stay strong!!!”).
The Russian Defense Ministry previously reported that on December 12, the Azerbaijani side blocked the Stepanakert-Goris road, the only highway that connects Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. The command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent is negotiating with the representatives of Azerbaijan on the resumption of the unhindered movement of civilian transport in this direction (the Lachin corridor).
Khachanov’s next opponent will be Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka (31st seed). Previously, the best result for a Russian at the Australian Open was to reach the third round.
