World No. 2 Spaniard Rafael Nadal revealed on social media that new medical tests have confirmed he has a second-degree iliopsoas injury, ruling him out of competition until the spring.
Nadal was injured in the second set of the 2023 Australian Open second round match against American Mackenzie McDonald. The Spaniard took a medical timeout but continued the match, losing to his opponent in three sets.
After an initial medical in Melbourne, Nadal said the average recovery time would be 6-8 weeks.
— On Thursday, I was at the Teknon clinic in Barcelona, where they made me pass several tests. The Melbourne results are confirmed, but the schedule remains the same. Treatments have been put in place and new tests will be carried out in 3 weeks to see the evolution,” wrote Nadal, 36.
Nadal holds the record for the most Grand Slam tournaments won in singles by a man (22).
