Djokovic on winning the Australian Open: ‘Probably the biggest win of my life’

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic said victory at the 2023 Australian Open may be the biggest victory of his life.

On Sunday, in the Australian Open final, Djokovic defeated Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6:3, 7:6 (7:4), 7:6 (7:5). After the game, Novak, 35, couldn’t hold back the tears.

— I must say that it was one of the most difficult tournaments in which I took part, considering the circumstances: I didn’t play last year, but I came back this year. I would like to thank all the people who welcomed me, made me feel at ease in Melbourne and in Australia. There’s a reason I played my best tennis of my entire career in this area.

I try to pinch myself and really relive those moments. It’s a long road. Only the team and the family know what we have been through for the past four or five weeks. I’d say it’s probably the biggest win of my life, given those circumstances. Thank you very much – and hopefully see you next year” Djokovic said after the game.

Djokovic also addressed the younger generation with a motivational speech.

Greece and Serbia are relatively small countries that don’t really have a tennis tradition. We really had no players to look up to. I think that’s a good message for any young tennis player around the world watching this right now, dreaming of being where we are right now. Everything is possible. Don’t let anyone take your dream away from you. It doesn’t matter where you come from. I think the more dysfunctional your childhood was, the stronger you become, and we are proof of that. Don’t let anyone take that dream away from you. Even if you’ve only found one supportive person in the world, dream big and you can do it.

Djokovic has reached the Australian Open final ten times and has never lost. In total, the Serb won the 22nd victory in Grand Slam tournaments and repeated the feat of Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
