Russian tennis player Alina Korneeva has admitted that she initially cleared the Russian final at the Australian Junior Open.
Korneeva won the tournament by defeating her compatriot Mirra Andreeva in three sets.
– Not that the Russian final was a surprise. Maybe at the start of the tournament I was thinking about this final. Obviously, you have to think about each game in order: first round, second round, etc. But I thought we were in different parts of the grid and together we could reach the final. I’m very happy with it. We constantly had good games for children in Russia and not only. Therefore, meeting in the Australian Open final is very cool.
Probably two or three years ago, when we played with Mirra, it was harder. I thought we were friends more. And when you realize it’s the Grand Slam final, there are no such thoughts at all. Behind the pitch we are his best friends, on the pitch we are opponents,” Korneeva told The Championship.
Korneeva is ranked 553rd in the WTA rankings. Prior to winning the AO, she had eight junior level wins and one ITF tournament win.
