The details of the deputies’ letter to President Boric asking him not to take away the courts from Patricio Cornejo

Sofía Cid and Andrés Celis asked the president to address the complex situation that the former tennis player’s club is going through after losing the rental contract with the Ministry of National Assets.

One of the most publicized issues in national tennis at the start of the year has been the complex situation that Patricio Cornejo is experiencing with his historic club located in Lo Barnechea. After the contract with National Assets was canceled, the former national team was very complicated and asked for help. It is now two deputies who send a letter to President Gabriel Boric.

And it is that today, December 31, the former tennis player must return the club to National Assets and will find himself without his great economic support, leaving things very complicated. All this as a result of debts derived from the pandemic.

Cornejo yes, he was clear with the situation. “We managed to pay what we owed, although unfortunately we lost the rental agreement we had with the Department of National Assets “, he exposed on the social networks. Cornejo even went so far as to ask Gabriel Boric for help through a moving video posted on the internet, which quickly went viral.

Something that was reproduced this day by the deputies of National Renewal, Sofía Cid and Andrés Celis. The parliamentarians have sent a letter to the President (with a copy to the Minister of Sport and the Minister of National Assets) seeking his intervention in the legal problem that the former Davis Cup captain is going through in the courts.

The reason for this letter is none other than to draw your attention, that of the Minister of Sports and that of the Minister of National Assets, so that the relevant measures can be adopted, within the current regulatory framework, to review the situation which afflicts the athlete and which undoubtedly has a negative impact on the training of new generations of tennis players in our country “, begins by exposing the text to which El Deportivo has had access.

Similarly, the letter refers to the origin of the problem: “We make this request on the understanding that the existing debt has been paid under the contract with National Assets; debt that arose as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which in this case meant closing the tennis club for a year without generating revenue added the parliamentarians.

Finally, the letter discusses the legislative framework within which the president and ministers could act to support Cornejo. “This request is made in consideration of the NATIONAL POLICY ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SPORT 2016-2025, which is one of its cross-cutting axes to generate the actions necessary to provide the country with infrastructure and accessible spaces, in accordance with the needs of the community, for the practice of physical activity and sport (4. Infrastructures and Sports Spaces) as well as the promotion of the independent practice of physical activity and sport individually and collectively (7. Promotion and dissemination) is clear from the letter.

Once the letter was sent, MP Andrés Celis reiterated the importance of acting to reach a solution for Patricio Cornejo. “We ask President Boric and Ministers Benado y Toro not to ignore this case, which is important to continue training new generations of tennis players in our country. It’s fair to consider the story of his life, of a lot of effort, that led him to be a national team at the age of 15. An example of social betterment and love of sport “, commented the deputy who is part of the sports commission.

For her part, Sofía Cid said that “It is very sad to see how the government but also the state is failing, abandoning an exceptional coach of Chilean tennis players, who brought us recognition and represented us in a very good way; and that obviously, after closing his club for a year without income due to the pandemic, it was difficult for him to recover. We hope that the president and the ministers can do something to help Patricio Cornejo not to lose his tennis club ”.

The situation of the Patricio Cornejo Club has even been addressed by the Chilean Tennis Federation, since its president, Sergio Elías, commented in an interview with El Deportivo that it could be the next headquarters of the national entity.

We want to exhaust the options with Club Patricio Cornejo. It could be a good alternative. National Assets is researching with the Ministry of Sports the next use of this site and it is possible that we, non-profit entities, as entities dedicated to the practice of sport, could be a solution for both National Assets and the Ministry of Sports and besides we are also solving a problem ”, said Elías when asked about the places the Federation envisaged as its headquarters once it decided to leave Cerro Colorado.
