President of the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) Shamil Tarpishchev in an interview with the press service of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) called Lyudmila Samsonova a candidate to enter the top 10 of the WTA rankings, and also spoke about the success of the Russians in international tournaments.
– Last week, Lyudmila Samsonova reached the final of the WTA 500 tournament in Abu Dhabi and, according to the new international ranking published on Monday, she fell from 19th place to 15th. At the same time, she said she dreams of one day leading the WTA rankings, but for now her goal is to break into the top ten. How realistic are his aspirations?
Samsonova is a talented tennis player. To date, the 15th place is the best position of her career, but she is potentially a top ten player.
– Lyudmila is already 24 years old. This does not mean that he is a very young tennis player…
Athletes develop in different ways. Central Russia – always with some delay. For us, 23-24 years old is exactly the age when tennis players show their best results.
– Recently, Samsonova usually added, right? So, last year she first won two tournaments in America of the WTA 250 series in the summer – in Washington and Cleveland, and in September she excelled at the “500” in Tokyo, where she beat Elena Rybakina and the Spaniard Garbine Muguruza.
– And in 2021 she successfully played for the Russian team at the Billie Jean King Cup and, by the way, beat the Swiss Belinda Bencic in the final, to whom she now lost in the final meeting in Abu Dubai. Samsonova is definitely progressing. In reality, the women now have a leader. This is Iga Swiatek from Poland. In the field, she is more reliable and more diverse than everyone else. Behind her are about fifteen tennis players of about the same level. Whoever is more stable climbs higher, and this in turn depends on the nervous system and physical condition. In general, Veronika Kudermetova, Samsonova and Anastasia Potapova are on the rise, Tarpishchev told the ROC press service.
Currently, the top 10 in the WTA rankings includes a Russian woman – Daria Kasatkina, who occupies the 8th line. Kudermetova is the 11th racket in the world.
