On Friday, February 17, the quarter-final matches will take place at the ATP tournament in Rotterdam. Our Daniil Medvedev will play in one of them. In the duel for a ticket for the quartet of the strongest of the tournament, the Russian will face the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime. This will be the fifth confrontation between tennis players at a professional level.
The Rotterdam tournament is only the third in a row for Daniil Medvedev this season. The Australian tour was a failure for the Russian. Yes, in Adelaide, our tennis player was able to reach the semi-finals, where he lost to the future Serbian winner Novak Djokovic. But speaking at the Australian Open, Medvedev frankly failed, losing in the third round to American Sebastian Korda. Especially against the background of the fact that in 2021 and 2022 the Russian reached the final of the tournament. Following the Australian tour, Daniil lost his place in the top 10 of the ATP rankings for the first time in the last three and a half years and took a break until the Rotterdam tournament.
Félix Auger-Aliassime successfully completed the end of last season, thanks to which he earned a place in the top 10. However, this year the Canadian has yet to satisfy his fans with good results. In Adelaide, Felix already covered the racket in the first round, and at the Australian Open he was able to make it to the fourth round, where he lost sensationally to the Czech Jiri Legechka. After the Slam, the Canadian, like Medvedev, took a break from tournaments until Rotterdam.
In this tournament, the two tennis players reached the quarter-finals without any problem. Admittedly, Daniel has a lost set. The Russian lost the very first match of the tournament against Spaniard Davidovich-Fokina with the score 4:6, but then confidently took the upper hand in straight sets 6:2, 6:2. In the second round, Medvedev defeated Dutchman van de Zandshulp with the score 6:2, 6:2. As for the Canadian, he beat the Italian Sonego (6:2, 6:3) and the French Barrera (6:4, 6:3) in straight sets.
Between them, Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime played four matches, in which only the Russian won. The most tenacious match between the tennis players was their last meeting, which was at the Australian Open in 2022. As part of the quarter-finals, Daniil dominated Felix in five sets, losing during the match 0:2 (6:7, 3:6, 7:6, 7:5, 6:4).
