Young people take over Roland Garros: Iga Swiatek and Cori Gauff will play the Roland-Garros final

The world number one is 21 years old and the North American 18, being the great representatives of the new generation of women’s tennis. Saturday one of the two will conquer Paris.

Paris had a historic day at Roland Garros. On a day when only the women’s team filled the main stadiums of Roland-Garros, two of the greatest representatives of the new generation dazzled the city of light. Iga Swiatek (1st) and Cori Gauff (23rd) sealed their way to the tournament final after comfortably overcoming their duels in the semi-finals.

The first to do so was the world number one, who captivated Daria Kasatkina (20th) for a resounding 6-2 and 6-1 . In one hour and four minutes, the Pole managed to secure passage for her second Roland Garros final (she was champion in 2020) and incidentally signs her 34th consecutive victory, being only one of the all-time records that Venus Williams has achieved In 2000.

Swiatek will be the big favorite and she is not only the best tennis player on the circuit, but also he has won the last five tournaments he has participated in (Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Sturgett and Rome). In Paris, he wants to conquer his second great, with only 21 years just turned.

But opposite, he will have another young star. It will be the American Cori Gauff, who four years after being crowned champion at Roland Garros Junior, made his first final of a major at the professional level in this same tournament.

He will do so at 18 and after not dropping a set en route to the final. In the round of the best four, she beat Martina Trevisan (59th) 6-3 and 6-1 . A victory that makes her the youngest Roland Garros finalist since Kim Clijsters in 2001 and the Youngest Grand Slam finalist since Maria Sharapova in 2004 . If he won, he would be in the top 10 for the first time in his career.

This is why the tennis world is amazed. The new generation has entered the women’s circuit in force, currently counting several young names who encourage the biggest tournaments in the world. Besides Swiatek and Gauff, Raducano, Rybakina, Leylah Fernandez and Anisimova are in the top 30 of the ranking before their 23rd birthday.
