Last week, Russian Daniil Medvedev delighted domestic tennis fans with a victory at the ATP-500 tournament in Rotterdam. At the same time, our tennis player does not slow down during another tournament, which is taking place on the Asian continent. Today, February 24, Medvedev will play the semi-final match of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open tournament in Doha. And his opponent will be 22-year-old Canadian Félix Auger-Olyassime.
Interestingly, the last meeting of tennis players took place just a week ago, just in Rotterdam. It was only then that Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime met in the quarter-finals and Daniil confidently dominated Felix in straight sets (6:2, 6:4). Now, the Russian and the Canadian will face off for a ticket to the tournament final.
In personal encounters, Auger-Aliassime has never beaten our tennis player: five matches – five defeats. Moreover, until today, tennis players have crossed paths exactly twice in the semi-finals. And both games, Daniil confidently won. So, at the US Open 2021, the Russian won in three sets – 6:4, 7:5, 6:2. And at the ATP Cup 2021 – in two (6:4, 6:0). Another interesting nuance: all of the tennis players’ personal encounters have taken place on hard courts and today’s is no exception.
Before the start of the Doha tournament, Medvedev was the 8th racket in the world, and Auger-Aliassime was the 9th. However, Daniel lost some ranking points, while the Canadian got them. Therefore, in LIVE mode, the Russian takes 10th place in the ATP rankings, and Felix – 8th.
It should also be noted that on the way to the semi-finals of the tournament, both tennis players overcame two rounds of struggle. Due to Medvedev’s victory over Briton Liam Broedy (6:4, 6:3) and Australian Christopher O’Connell (6:2, 4:6, 7:5). As for Auger-Aliassime, he first edged the Australian Jason Kubler (4:6, 6:1, 6:4), then the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina (6:4, 7:6).
