Medvedev overtakes Murray and is champion in Doha

The Russian beat the Briton in straight sets, with a 6-4 double, and remains with the ATP 250 contested in Qatar, thus adding his seventeenth title.

Daniil Medvedev (8th) celebrates in Doha. The tennis player The Russian beat Andy Murray (70th) in the ATP 250 final which took place in Qatar. The duel between the two former numbers 1 – the Briton was in 2016 and the Russian at the start of 2022 – was shorter than expected, since the winner won in two sets, with an expressive 6-2 in each.

The Scot wanted to end his week with a new title, something he hadn’t achieved since 2019. However, the effort of the veteran was not enough to face the Russian, solid at all times in the final.

To reach this stage, Medveded left Liam Broady (147), Christopher O’Connell (94) and Félix Auger-Aliassime (9) on the road. For his part, Murray eliminated Alexander Zverev (16), Alexandre Müller (170) and Jirí Lehecka (52).

Regarding the definition process, in the first set, Medvedev started rocking the court early, with a break. After that there was no marked dominance, but he was lucid enough not to be beaten by the Russian. For the 4-1 came another break and there was little the Brits could do. In the second set, Murray conceded on his first serve. Again he was down at the start and had to row against the current. The Glasgow-born man didn’t stay by attitude, but the Moscow native wasn’t surprised and took the game at his own pace.

The Brit competes, but is far from the triumphs of yesteryear. Once again, he succumbed in the final, just like in Stuttgart and Sydney in 2022.

After the fall, Andy Murray assured that: “I did not play well enough, I feel good physically It had been a long time since he had played five games in a row. So that’s great news for me.”

“A while ago I thought I wouldn’t return to competition, but I’m not just going to have a good time on the pitch, I have goals and illusions that drive me. I still think I can win titles and I’m curious to see how far I can go with this physical limitation that I have. I would like to reach 800 wins as a professional, so I will continue to work to try to achieve this “, added the tennis player, who has 723 victories to his credit.

On the other hand, the winner of the day praised his service rival, saying: “Andy is a true legend, what he does seems incredible to me.”

In this way, Daniil Medvedev adds a trophy for the second week in a row -the previous one had won in Rotterdam- and climbed to seventh place in the ATP rankings, one place ahead of Rafael Nadal, who fell to eighth place.
