2016 Olympic doubles champion Ekaterina Makarova spoke about the non-admission of Russian athletes to Wimbledon.
Makarova believes that the organizers of the Grand Slam tournament have no right to make such decisions.
In April, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced that Russians and Belarusians were banned from participating in UK tournaments in 2022, even in neutral status, due to events in Ukraine. For this, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) have decided not to award scoring points for performances at Wimbledon.
– I do not know how such a decision could be taken to prevent the admission of Russians and Belarusians. The rules state that the organizers of the Grand Slam tournament have no right to make such decisions. It’s a personal sport, we represent ourselves to a certain extent. Now, even so, our guys and girls are going to court without a flag and without mentioning the country.
In my opinion, keeping them out of a Grand Slam tournament, especially one as storied as Wimbledon, is a mistake. For me, this solution is not clear. This year Wimbledon invited me to the Tournament of Legends, but then they sent me a letter which unfortunately we will not be able to accept you. In a nutshell, it’s not an easy situation, but the actions of the Wimbledon organizers are not very clear to me,” Sport24 Makarova quotes.
Wimbledon 2022 will take place from June 27 to July 10.
