Marat Safin could have been world number one six years in a row if he had worked hard, but he is a creator by nature, said Shamil Tarpishchev, president of the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF).
– Why did Marat Safin finish so quickly? He’s an artist inside. If he plowed like Federer, maybe in his place he was the first for six consecutive years. But he is different by nature – a creator. So from that point of view, I improvised a lot, so I made a lot of mistakes. There probably wasn’t 100% concentration, you had to make sure he didn’t have a fever,” Tarpischev told the Championship.
Safin is the winner of 15 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournaments, won two Grand Slam tournaments (US Open‑2000, Australian Open‑2005). As a member of the Russian national team, he twice became a Davis Cup winner. The tennis player ended his career in 2009.
