International Tennis Federation (ITF) President David Haggerty called it a well-rounded decision to continue to allow neutral Russian athletes to compete, noting that the ITF does not mix sport and politics.
Do not mix sport and politics. A balanced solution is the recognition of athletes as individuals and not as a country. That’s exactly what the ITF does,” Haggerty quotes Yahoo Japan .
Last year, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced that Russians and Belarusians were banned from playing Wimbledon and other tournaments in the UK due to of the situation in Ukraine. The WTA and ATP stripped the tournament of ranking points.
Last week, media reported that Wimbledon organizers would allow Russians to participate in the tournament.
