Tomás Barrios reaches the Poznan Challenger final and achieves his best position in the ATP rankings

Tomás Barrios (137th) has another opportunity to lift his second title. The Chilean had a great week at the Poznan Challenger. This Saturday, he beat the Argentinian Genaro Olivieri (248th) and qualified for the final of the competition. In the semi, against the trasandino, the chillanejo showed his best tennis, winning in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1.

One hour and nineteen minutes were enough for the national racket to sign its passage to the definition, where it will face the French Arthur Rinderknech (68th) seed of the tournament, who beat the Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov (197th) 6-3, 7-6, in the other semi-final.

In Saturday’s duel, it was Barrios who set the tone from start to finish. However, the first round was more contested than the second. From the outset, they managed to take a 2-0 lead with serve in favor in the third game. But the Argentinian broke it to get closer.

The latter was a tonic during the first part. The native of the Ñuble region was able to liquidate the shares earlier, having a order with his serve, being 5-3. There, against all odds, Olivieri managed to get out of the way and break his Game. The logical thing was that in the next he would match the shares, however, now it was Barrios who went bankrupt. 6-4 to the pocket.

After that, the Argentinian tennis player fell into a well and the Chilean took advantage. The second set was entirely favorable to the now finalist, who won 6-1.

Beyond the relative calm with which Tomás Barrios reached the final, the tournament in Poland was not easy for the Chilean. After saying goodbye to Roland Garros in qualifying, he moved to Poznan, where he first beat the Italian Andrea Arnaboldi (220th) in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

In the round of 16, he managed to beat the German Elmar Ejupovic (418th) 6-2 and 7-5 in a duel where the European struggled a lot in the second round despite a large upgrade to the first. While in the round of the best eight, the national won over the one who has been his most difficult obstacle so far: Zizou Bergs (199th), a Belgian whom he beat 7-5, 3-6 and 7-6.

With its passage in the final of the Challenger, Barrios will enter the top 130 in the next ATP rankings update. The points added this week will put him in 126th place, the best position of his career so far.

It will be the second final of the year for the chillanejo, who at the beginning of last May fell in the definition of the Bahia Challenger against the Portuguese Joao Domingues, 7-6 (9) and 6-1. If he wins the title this Sunday, it would be his second coronation, joining the Meerbusch Challenger 2021.
