Olympic speed skating champion in Turin, State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova considers it premature to broach the subject of a “code of conduct” for Russians to participate in the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
Wimbledon 2023 will take place from July 3-16.
– It is still difficult to say what will be in this “code”. So far everything can be assumed, especially based on the input data we know at the moment. It seems to me that this was done on purpose for us to fall for the trap and actively discuss, ask our athletes and thus reversals before an important tournament. Therefore, we cannot discuss it prematurely, because the document as such does not exist, Zhurova told RT.
Earlier, the UK edition of the Daily Mail reported that Russian tennis players will only be allowed into Wimbledon after signing a special code of conduct. The document is being finalized, but it is expected that Russian tennis players will be required during the tournament to refuse any overt show of support for their country, any positive comments about the Russian Federation, as well as the wearing of the flag. In case of violation of the code, sanctions can be applied to Russians, up to and including expulsion.
The Russians and Belarusians have been suspended from the Wimbledon tournament in 2022 due to events in Ukraine. For this, the organizers of the competition were fined one million dollars, and the WTA and ATP deprived the tournament of ranking points.
