The Association commented on the interview with Lesya Tsurenko
Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) published an answer to the interview Lesia Tsurenko about the panic attack of a Ukrainian tennis player after a conversation with the CEO of the organization, Steve Simon.
“First of all, we recognize the emotions that Lesya and all of our Ukrainian athletes have, and which they continue to cope with during this very difficult period of time. We are witnessing an ongoing terrible war that continues to bring unforeseen circumstances with repercussions that affect the world as well as the WTA World Tour and its members.”
“The WTA has consistently demonstrated our full support for Ukraine and strongly condemns the actions of the Russian government. That said, the core principle of the WTA remains to ensure that individual athletes can compete in professional tennis competition on the basis of their ability and without any form of discrimination, and will not be penalized because of the decisions made by their country’s leadership.”
Recall that in Indian Wells, a few minutes before the start of the meeting against Sobolenko, the Ukrainian refused to play “for personal reasons.” Lesya said that Steve Simon said that if the players from Russia and Belarus support the war, then this is only their own opinion. The functionary also expressed confidence that the Russians would be allowed to the Olympics following the example of tennis tournaments, despite the war they unleashed.
In Indian Wells, Tsurenko started in qualifying and won four meetings, reaching the third round at this tournament for the first time since 2019.
