Former tennis player called on the Association to comment on the essence of the statements of its chairman
Former first racket of Ukraine Alexander Dolgopolov commented on the scandal with the chairman of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Steve Simon.
“1 – to say some nonsense.
2 – Reply with water without addressing a single word your CEO dared to say. You can’t fool us, WTA.”
“Reply on topic. Is it normal for tennis players to support an invasion or not? What is the official policy on this matter? People deserve to know!
“In response, we will hear silence. Because the moment Steve publicly confirms his words “it’s just their opinion”, he will set a precedent for any racism, insults and much more, which is just an opinion that he should not react to.
“And if he confirms that tennis players can support the invasion, well, I think that will not add good publicity. The only way out is to apologize for the wrong words, but they are too proud and don’t make mistakes.”
In Indian Wells, a few minutes before the start of the meeting against Belarusian tennis player Arina Sobolenko, Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko refused to play “for personal reasons.” Lesya said that Steve Simon said that if players from Russia and Belarus support the war, then this is only their own opinion. The functionary also expressed confidence that the Russians would be allowed to the Olympics following the example of tennis tournaments, despite the war they unleashed.
After the start of the military invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, Oleksandr Dolgopolov joined the ranks of the territorial defense. Also, the ex-tennis player is actively involved in humanitarian assistance.
In response, we will hear silence. Because the moment Steve publicly confirms his words “it’s just their opinion”, he will set a precedent, about any racism, insults and many more, being just an opinion, which he shouldn’t react to..
