The world’s first polka racket Iga Schwentek will not participate in the Miami tournament and the Billie Jean King Cup due to a rib injury, reports the press office of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
At the WTA1000 tournament in Miami, the current winner will be replaced by Austrian Julia Graber.
— During and after the Doha tournament, I fought against a strong infection. I was cleared to play, but I had a severe coughing fit which caused me to injure my ribs. We tried to deal with it and keep playing as long as it’s safe for me.
We have analyzed the data over the past few days and my doctor has made a diagnosis. Unfortunately, I still feel a lot of discomfort and pain and cannot compete. I need a break to recover, and I’m forced to give up the Miami tournament and the Billie Jean King Cup.
It’s a really tough decision, but health is the most important thing,” Schwentek, 21, wrote on social media.
The tennis player stressed that the timing of the return to the court will depend on the recovery process and the recommendations of her medical staff.
The Miami tournament runs from March 21 to April 2. The Polish national team in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier on April 14-15 in Astana will play with the Kazakhstan national team.
