The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) thanked the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), which is the organizer of Wimbledon, and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) for allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in tournaments.
On Friday, the AELTC and the LTA announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the competition in a neutral status.
“We are delighted that all players will have the opportunity to participate in the Wimbledon and LTA events this summer. It has taken a collaborative effort across the sport to find an acceptable solution that protects the fairness of the game. This situation remains extremely difficult and we would like to thank Wimbledon and the LTA for their efforts to achieve this result,” the WTA and ATP said in a statement.
Russian and Belarusian tennis players have been suspended from the Wimbledon tournament in 2022 due to events in Ukraine. For this, the organizers of the competition were fined one million dollars, and the WTA and ATP deprived the tournament of ranking points.
Wimbledon 2023 will take place from July 3-16.
