The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), which is the organizer of Wimbledon, has announced the admission of athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the tournament in a neutral status.
According to the statement of the organizers, it follows that applications from Russian and Belarusian tennis players will be accepted provided that they act as “neutral” athletes and respect certain conditions. In particular, athletes will be prohibited from publicly expressing their support for SVO at the tournament, receiving funds from states, and also having state-owned companies controlled by Russia and Belarus as sponsors.
At the same time, it is noted that “if the circumstances change significantly in the period before the start of the tournament”, the organizers will take “appropriate measures”.
The Russians and Belarusians have been suspended from the Wimbledon tournament in 2022 due to events in Ukraine. For this, the organizers of the competition were fined one million dollars, and the WTA and ATP deprived the tournament of ranking points.
Wimbledon 2023 will take place from July 3-16.
