Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev commented on Wimbledon organizers’ decision to allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in the tournament in 2023.
On Friday, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), which is the organizer of Wimbledon, announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the competition in a neutral status and under certain conditions. In particular, athletes will be prohibited from publicly expressing their support for SVO at the tournament, receiving funds from states, and also having state-owned companies controlled by Russia and Belarus as sponsors.
“I’m glad to know that. I always said that if I could play at Wimbledon, I would be really happy to be there. I love this tournament.
It’s the only Grand Slam where I haven’t reached the quarter-finals yet. And I can’t say that I hate weed at least. I like it. So I really want to prove myself there. Happy to have the chance to play this year.
I don’t know what the public’s reaction will be, I can’t control it, but I’ll be happy to play there in front of everyone, I hope on big courts, and I hope to play amazing matches, France24 quote Medvedev.
Wimbledon 2023 is scheduled for July 3-16.
