Although what they want most is time off and a little rest, parents aren’t so sophisticated or demanding to ask for gifts on their Sunday, June 19th. At least the eight parents consulted here content themselves with rather simple and primitive pleasures.
If you’re a parent and I tell you the name Henry Jackson Smart, it probably means nothing to you. But it turns out that this is a very important character, responsible for the fact that this Sunday you receive, in the best case, a small gift and/or breakfast in bed.
Jackson Smart was an American Civil War veteran who, after becoming a widower, was placed in charge of his six children. Already an adult, her eldest daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, attended a mass where they spoke about the recently declared Mother’s Day. He immediately thought that his devoted father, and all good fathers in his country, also deserved a day of remembrance. Thus began a crusade to propose his father Henry’s birthday—June 5—as the date for the commemoration of America’s dads.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson recognized the date, but Congress was reluctant to make it official. lest he fall into commercialization . It was a different time: finally, it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday in June Father’s Day and in 1972, under Nixon’s term, it officially became a national holiday.
So official that it is now global, a transversal festival from West to East. In Japan, in fact, it is one of the most important holidays of the year, and in its country of origin, the United States, it moves around 16 billion.
Without spoilers or with the intention of criticizing consumerism, the reality is that the parents we interviewed for this article, 100% expressed, with eyes wide open and a smile of a child, that what they want the more entertaining for this Father’s Day Sunday, June 19 — is perhaps the one luxury you can’t buy: time.
“When you buy something, you don’t buy it with money, but you buy it with the life you have spent having that money. But the only thing that cannot be bought is life; life happens,” said Pepe Mujica in one of his many phrases for bronze. A reflection that sticks quite well to what we are talking about, but which does not help us much in our purpose: to know what gifts today’s parents would like to receive.
That’s why, leaving aside metaphysics and utopia, we asked dads to take things seriously and tell us what gifts they want to open on their day.
rapper dad
“They’ve been here many times before, but when I was young, I never got to see them. Every time a song from them plays, I start shaking my head and I feel like I could really use a dose of childhood memories so it would be a great gift to get a ticket to the Cypress Hill concert it would be even better if there were two so I could go with my daughter and that she knows the mystique that a concert generates,” says Esteban (39), from Rancagua. The show will take place on Thursday, September 29 at the Caupolican Theater and tickets cost between $34,500 (gallery) and $40,250 (court) .

“Unlike moms, who are scared or even offended by practical things, as a family man and lover of the simple things, who no longer has the time or the money to indulge in anything, I “I very much appreciate these objects that solve your day. That’s why this father humbly wants a nice package of comfortable and soft underwear for his day,” says Lucas (37), from Santiago.

“If I had the option of choosing a gift, it would be a little peace, maybe a week, so I could sleep well. In this sense, a weekend in a spa hotel, where I am treated and where I have no more mental fatigue than deciding what to eat or drink, would be sensational. Now, realizing that in my case it’s impossible, I settle for something simple, like delicious slippers for this harsh winter that is coming,” admits Nicolás (39) from Viña del Mar.

“Lately, I have taken a liking to coffee and I find it very interesting to do it professionally. I would like a coffee maker, as a way to treat myself before going to work. It would be good, because I would take it as a recognition of the effort and I would reconnect with it every morning”, laments the Chilean Mauricio (38), from Miami.

music lover dad
“With my son, we found in music a space of shared fanaticism. What I like the most is that he prefers discovering music from previous decades and I’m most interested in researching new sounds. So as a gift I would choose a vinyl of our mutual love for the rapper Notorious BIG or for the Pixies, my son’s favorite band. Of the contemporary, it could be the jewel Hunter by Lil Nas X, a musician who, with my son, we found a super genius. In addition, the sheer cover of this vinyl sized record is worth buying . Other options that would make me happy would be the vinyls of The Smile —Thom Yorke’s new band— or Wet Leg, the albums of this year that I repeat the most”, recommends Juan Marcelo (40 years old) from Maipú.

“For years I gave my dad the typical things, like the toolbox or the slippers. Now that I’m a dad, and it’s the first year that I can celebrate him, I realize that I just want to enjoy a pleasant time, a rich conversation with the family I have formed. An ideal gift for me would be something that I can share with them. For this reason, I told my wife that we could make delicious cocktails to celebrate our first year as parents. We started looking for a recipe and found a set that provided what it took to enjoy a Kentucky mule, which resembles the popular mule from Moscow but instead of vodka it contains bourbon,” says Martín (32) from Valparaíso.

sports dad
“One of the things that I consider a real luxury is the little time I give myself to go running or play tennis. In that sense, and being super honest and down to earth, for Father’s Day it would be great to receive a sporting item, like a jockey to play tennis or something similar,” asks Sven (35 years) from Vina del Mar.

“I have always wanted to receive as a gift, because I share this rite as a bond with my daughter and it is a space of encounter and identity, a Wanderers shirt. That, or maybe something else in the team, is something that would mark me a lot, ”recognizes Pablo (39) from, obviously, Valparaíso.

winegrower dad
“I believe there is never a bad gift because the gifts children give are in line with the reality of their milestones, but I believe setting an example of celebration and joy is the best thing a father can ask. Personally, I would like to receive a courier with a tasting of blended wine, to taste various blends. It is a gift that becomes a good time with adult children, ”advises José Hernán (42), from Santiago.
